Career

“Hairy Carrie,” Afroman’s debut single, was written while he was a middle schooler and was about a classmate who picked on other kids because of their hair. He started making music videos and marketing them to his peers while he was in seventh grade. A video he made about his eighth grade instructor was the first one he had made, he said. It was a major issue while I was in school, and she had me expelled for having sagging pants. I decided to write a song about her, and it ended up selling 400 copies—to everyone from students to instructors. Plus, I came to the realization that my song was about school, so I guess I was still there even though I wasn’t physically present. The only reason these strangers would stop by my house was to tell me how awesome the song was.

In his younger years, Afroman would often play guitar and drums at church services. He relocated to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he befriended producer Tim Ramenofsky, bassist/keyboardist Darrell Havard, and drummer Jody Stallone, after independently releasing his debut album, “My Fro-losophy,” on October 6, 1998.

T-Bones Records released Afroman’s 2000 album “Because I Got High,” which was a commercial success. Countless countries across the globe—including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Scotland, and Australia—had the title tune as their number one song. Two times platinum in Australia and eight times platinum elsewhere, it is the certification for the single.

From Afroman’s 2000 album “Sell Your Dope,” the single “Crazy Rap” peaked at #7 in Ireland and #10 in the UK, and it went triple platinum in the US. After signing with Universal Records in 2001, he put out the Gold album “The Good Times” in 2002. It peaked at #9 on the “Billboard” Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #10 on the “Billboard” 200 chart.

With 2004’s “Afroholic… The Even Better Times,” Afroman resumed independent album release, and the album reached #99 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list. His other albums include “Jobe Bells” (2004), “4R0:20” (2004), “The Hungry Hustlerz: Starvation Is Motivation” (2004), “Drunk ‘n’ High” (2006), “A Colt 45 Christmas” (2006), “Waiting to Inhale” (2008), and “Frobama: Head of State” (2009).

Beginning with the mixtapes “Fro-Jams,” “Save a Cadillac, Ride a Homeboy,” “The Prodigal Son,” and “Cross-Country Pimpin'” (2011), he went on to release four full-length albums in the following years: “Marijuana Music” (2013), “The Frorider” (2014), “Happy to Be Alive” (2016), “Cold Fro-T-5 and Two Frigg Fraggs” (2017), “Save a Cadillac, Ride a Homeboy” (2020), and “Lemon Pound Cake” (2022). Afroman, in collaboration with Weedmaps and the nonprofit Norml, published a version of “Because I Got High” in 2014 that advocated for the legalization of marijuana.

Afroman Personal Life

Afroman claimed to have undergone a complete transformation after converting to Christianity in 2003. He was charged with assault in 2015 after allegedly hitting Haley Byrd at a concert; he entered a guilty plea, completed anger therapy, and paid a $65,000 settlement.

Authorities in Ohio conducting drug trafficking investigations searched Afroman’s residence in August 2022, but they came up empty-handed. He went on to produce music referencing the raid, which he based on security camera video of, and critique the damage. Police officers filed a lawsuit against Afroman in March 2023, claiming that the footage violated their privacy.
