The Ahoi Ashtami vrat and puja are devoted to Ahoi Mata, also known as Goddess Hoi.

The Vrat is observed by mothers for the well-being of their children.

In most parts of North India, the date of Ahoi Ashtami 2023 is November 05. (The moonrise time is at 9:09 PM.)

Hoi Mata vrat is more observed in the north of India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

When is Ahoi Ashtami vrat Observed?

It is observed on the eighth day of the waning moon, or the Krishna Paksha Ashtami of Kartik month, according to the traditional Hindu calendar used in North India.

Who is Hoi Mata?

Ahoi, also known as Hoi Mata, is a manifestation of Mother Goddess Shakti who is mostly worshipped by female members of the household.

On the walls of rural households, she is revered. During Ahoi Ashtami and other celebrations, her image is painted on the walls. She is revered for ensuring the health and longevity of offspring.  According to folklore, she is known to guard the children of all living beings.

Ahoi Ashtami Fasting

The fasting period for Ahoi Ashtami is from sunrise to the sighting of the moon. However, some women break their fast when they see the first star.

• Women who observe the vrat, gets up before sunrise, clean the house, take a bath, and then go to a temple.

• She then fasts from daybreak till the sighting of the moon or the first star.

• Throughout the day, she places a bowl of water in front of the sketch or picture of Ahoi Mata. She drapes a red thread around the bowl and smears kumkum and Chandan around the edges.

• In the evening, she listens to the Ahoi mata vrat katha.

• Sweets and regional specialities are prepared and presented to the Goddess. This is later shared with the kids.
