Career

After meeting Ben Moody, a young musician, at a Christian youth camp in 1994, Lee became friends with him. They hit it off right away and began performing music together; they eventually began doing acoustic gigs at local Little Rock coffee shops and bookshops. After their time together, Lee and Moody co-founded the rock band Evanescence in 1995. They dropped an extended play (EP) in 1998 and another in 1999, both as a duet. Upon the turn of the century, Evanescence self-released a demo CD titled “Origin,” which was distributed at hometown concerts. Wind Up Records signed the band in 2001.

With the release of their debut studio album, “Fallen,” in 2003, Evanescence finally broke through to the mainstream. The album’s three top singles—”Bring Me to Life,” “Going Under,” and “My Immortal”—led to its third-place appearance on the Billboard 200. In addition to winning for Best New Artist, Evanescence also took home the trophy for Best Hard Rock Performance with their song “Bring Me to Life.” Terry Balsamo became the regular lead guitarist and co-lyricist of Evanescence after Moody quit the band in the midst of the “Fallen” tour in Europe owing to artistic disputes.

In 2004, Evanescence set off on yet another tour in support of the release of “Anywhere but Home,” a live CD and concert DVD. Lee isolated herself at home and stopped communicating with others once the tour ended. She went to therapy, painted, and composed music while she was in isolation. In the end, Lee and Balsamo worked together again on “The Open Door,” Evanescence’s second studio album, which they co-wrote and recorded. With its 2006 release, the album made its debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and gave birth to the popular song “Call Me When You’re Sober.”

Even another song, “Sweet Sacrifice,” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. The third studio album by Evanescence, simply titled “Evanescence,” was released in 2011 following a five-year hiatus from recording. In the same vein as its predecessor, it topped the Billboard 200 upon release. “Synthesis,” Evanescence’s fourth studio album, was released in late 2017 after yet another lengthy hiatus. The album featured symphonic and electronica arrangements of the band’s earlier songs and opened at number eight on the Billboard 200. The following year, in 2021, they released “The Bitter Truth.”

Featured vocalist on tracks by Big Dismal, David Hodges, and Seether, Lee launched her solo career in the early 2000s. She has a guest appearance on the 2008 tribute CD “Nightmare Revisited,” which features renditions of the score and songs from the animated feature “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” “Muppets: The Green Album” (2011) and “We Walk the Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash” (2012) were two other tribute albums to which Lee subsequently participated. Lee collaborated with musician and composer Dave Eggar to develop film scores during Evanescence’s 2013 break. The duo collaborated on the score for the 2014 film “War Story,” and the CD was then titled “Aftermath.” Lee, Eggar, and Chuck Palmer scored the 2010 short film “Indigo Grey: The Passage.”

The first EP by Lee as a solo artist, “Recover, Vol. 1,” came out in early 2016. It featured cover versions of songs by Chris Isaak, Portishead, U2, and Led Zeppelin. Her self-titled debut album was out later that year, titled “Dream Too Much.” Not only that, but Lee and Eggar worked together again on the score for the film “Blind.” She added her 2017 song “Speak to Me” to the soundtrack of the film “Voice from the Stone.” Featured vocalists on tracks by Lindsey Stirling, Bring Me the Horizon, Wagakki Band, Halestorm, Body Count, and Wagakki are just a few of Lee’s numerous solo contributions.
