Hillel Slovak was a bandmate of Kiedis’s before he met him at a concert when Kiedis was fifteen years old. Kiedis graduated with honors in June 1980 despite his heavy drug use during his time in high school. Later, he decided to pursue a degree in writing at UCLA.
In the early 1980s, Kiedis, Slovak, and Flea started making music together; later, they invited their other friend and former classmate Jack Irons to join them. They drew inspiration from the punk/funk fusion group Defunkt. Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem was the original name of the group that the four of them founded.
