Career
With Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith, Marley launched his musical career in 1963 as a member of The Wailers. The group would go on to create Marley’s signature sound, which would be heard by people all over the globe. In February 1964, the Wailers’ single “Simmer Down” became the number-one hit in Jamaica. They collaborated with producer Lee Scratch Perry to develop some of the first reggae records.
Following the dissolution of the original lineup in 1974, Marley embarked on a solo career. In Kingston, Jamaica, on February 10, 1966, Bob wed Alpharita Constantia “Rita” Anderson. He had four children with Rita and took in two more from her past marriages. He was also the father of five children by different women. Reggae musicians Ziggy, Stephen, and Damian all went on to win Grammys. After an assassination attempt in 1976 that killed Bob, Rita, manager Don Taylor, and band staffer Louis Griffiths, Marley moved to London from Jamaica, where he lived for the most of his life.
The deep spirituality that Marley conveyed through his music was a reflection of his devotion as a Rastafari. Because each of the twelve sects was made up of people born in a different month, Marley was believed by his biographers to have been a member of the Tribe of Joseph, which was a branch of the Twelve Tribes Mansion, one of the Rastafari Mansions. Under Marley’s toenail, doctors found a malignant melanoma in July 1977. Marley’s physician recommended amputating his toe, but Bob rejected the idea because of his strong religious convictions and the concern that it would hinder his performance. Marley had the nail and nail bed surgically removed, and then a skin transplant from his thigh was used to cover the area. He kept on touring until his final performance on September 23, 1980, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He learned on a trip to the hospital two days prior that his cancer had progressed to his brain after collapsing while running in Central Park. It was after Bob tried Josef Issels’ alternative cancer treatment in Bavaria that he decided to go back to Jamaica. His health declined throughout the flight, so upon arrival in Miami, he was transferred to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, which is now known as University of Miami Hospital. As a 36-year-old, Marley passed away on May 11, 1981. He told his son Ziggy, “Money can’t buy life,” in his last words. Jamaica paid tribute to Marley with a state funeral and an Order of Merit designation.
