Weathers played defensive end on his college football squad. He was a member of the Long Beach City College football team in 1966, but he hurt his ankle after tripping over a curb near the track. He later transferred to San Diego State University, where he played football for the Aztecs and was a letterman in 1968 and 1969. In 1969, he was a key player in the Aztecs’ Pasadena Bowl victory. The Oakland Raiders signed Carl, a free agent in 1970, after he had been ranked #18 in the Final UPI Poll.
He played seven games in 1970 and one game in 1971 as a linebacker for the squad.
