Devotees observe Damodar Dwadashi Vrat in order to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the most auspicious days of the year and is observed on the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month. Damodar is one of Lord Vishnu’s many identities, which is why this day is known as Damodar Dwadashi.

The Shravan month is observed when the Shravan Nakshatra constellation appears in the night sky. This month is also dedicated to Lord Shiva, and people take advantage of this auspicious month to worship him. As devotees are blessed by Lord Shiva’s grace, worshipping him during this month can also bring them pleasure and other great benefits.

Rituals of Damodar Dwadashi

  • Early in the morning, devotees who are celebrating Damodar Dwadashi should arise.
  • After completing daily responsibilities, one should bathe completely in a pond or river.
  • If you are unable to visit a river or reservoir, you can take a bath at home with pure water. Given that Gangajal is considered the purest, if it is available at home, it should be added to the ablution water.
  • After this, adopt a vow to fast for the remainder of the day.
  • On this auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worship him with total devotion.
  • Offer Shunu and Krishna flowers, fruits, Roli, Akshata, Prasad, and other sacred items.
  • Offer them a handcrafted bamboo fan, as it is highly valued by the nobles.
  • Chant Vishnu Sahasranama and other mantras afterward. You can also listen to and perform Lord Vishnu’s bhajans. It is believed that doing so will fill the room with pleasure and purity.
  • Now, distribute the Prasad to the children and others in attendance.
  • On this auspicious day, it is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu with appropriate rituals and devotion will help obtain the deity’s blessings.
  • Donating rice, jaggery, fruits, and clothing to brahmins results in contentment and prosperity.
  • Putrada Ekadashi Vrat participants typically break their fast on Damodar Ekadashi. They should avoid consuming certain foods, including boiled rice, alcohol, meat, legumes, etc.

शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशं,
विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्ण शुभाङ्गम् ।
लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यम्,
वन्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम् ।।

सशङ्खचक्रं सकिरीटकुण्डलं सपीतवस्त्रं सरसीरुहेक्षणम्,
सहारवक्षस्स्थलशोभिकौस्तुभं नमामि विष्णुं शिरसा चतुर्भुजम् ।
सशङ्खचक्रं सकिरीटकुण्डलं सपीतवस्त्रं सरसीरुहेक्षणम्,
सहारवक्षस्स्थलशोभिकौस्तुभं नमामि विष्णुं शिरसा चतुर्भुजम्।।

Significance of Damodar Dwadashi

Damodar Dwadashi is a special day in which Lord Vishnu is honoured. It is observed on the twelfth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. On this day, worshipping Lord Vishnu with the correct rituals can bring followers and devotees great happiness and prosperity. In the auspicious month of Shravan, it is believed that appealing to Lord Vishnu is as effective as worshipping Lord Shiva.

On this day, devotees also donate rice, fruits, and clothing to the Brahmin.
As a member of the sacred trinity “Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara” and the protector of the universe, Lord Vishnu is honoured with numerous rituals in Hinduism.

In order to protect the universe from evil, Lord Vishnu has taken many incarnations throughout history. There are a variety of rituals performed to worship Lord Vishnu and desire his blessings. Thus, Damodar Dwadashi is one of the numerous essential rituals diligently performed by Lord Vishnu’s devotees.

Damodar Dwadashi is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan according to the traditional Hindu calendar, and in August according to the Gregorian calendar.

The day preceding Damodar Dwadashi is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is known as Pavitra Ekadashi Vrat or Putrada Ekadashi Vrat. Damodar being one of Lord Vishnu’s many names, Damodar Dwadashi is entirely associated with him. After worshipping Lord Vishnu, devotees who celebrate this auspicious day observe Putrada Ekadashi or Pavitra Ekadashi Vrat and break their fast with the Prasad.
