Career

On 22 November 2017, in a 2-1 Primera División away loss to River Plate, Núñez made his first appearance for Peñarol’s first squad. On October 13, 2018, in a home victory over Fénix, he scored his debut professional goal. He was signed to a five-year deal by the Spanish Segunda División club Almería on August 29, 2019, for an unprecedented club record cost of approximately $4.5 million, with an additional $1.5 million in variables. Having scored 16 goals in his sole season at Almería, he finished tied for fourth place in the league for goals scored.

After Núñez signed a five-year contract with the Portuguese club, Benfica paid a club record transfer fee of €24 million to acquire him on 4 September 2020. In a group stage encounter for the UEFA Europa League on October 22, he scored his first goals for the club, a hat trick. His debut goal in the Primeira Liga came a few days afterwards.

Darwin Núñez scored two vital goals in the quarter-finals of the 2021-22 Champions League match against Liverpool, an English powerhouse. Everyone was going crazy after his performance. The future seemed bright for Núñez, according to even Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp. After 28 games in the Primeira Liga, he scored 26 goals and was named the league’s best scorer (Bola de Prata). Benfica also won the league, and Darwin was recognized for his outstanding performance by being awarded both the Player of the Year and a member of the Team of the Year.

Núñez became Liverpool’s record transferee when they transferred him to them for €75 million plus €25 million in add-ons on 13 June 2022 from Benfica. On his debut against Fulham, Núñez continued his impressive form from his time at Benfica by scoring his first league goal for his new team and setting up Salah for an assist. In Liverpool’s 7-1 away victory over Rangers on October 12, he scored his first Champions League goal.

Throughout the initial part of the season, Núñez faced significant criticism for squandering multiple significant opportunities in games. He played in 42 games all season long but managed to score just 15 goals in all competitions. He was ruled out of the 2024 EFL Cup final, which Liverpool won over Chelsea, due to a recurrence of an injury he suffered at the season’s finish. The fans still gave him kudos for all he did during the EFL Cup run, even if he wasn’t there.

The under-20 squad that placed third in the 2019 South American U-20 Championship included Núñez, who rose through the ranks of the Uruguayan junior team. Additionally, he reached the round of 16 in 2019 with the FIFA U-20 World Cup team. At the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru, he also competed for the under-22 team that placed fourth.

He made his senior national team debut on October 16th in a friendly match against Peru after receiving his first call-up in September 2019 for friendlies against the US and Costa Rica. Following a knee injury, Núñez did not participate in the 2021 Copa América in Brazil, despite being named to Uruguay’s final 26-man squad in June of that year.

Being named to Uruguay’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar gave him his second opportunity to play on a grand stage for his nation. Despite a strong showing, Uruguay was knocked out of the competition in the group stage by South Korea.

Núñez was re-called to the Uruguayan national team in June 2024 to compete in the 2024 Copa América in the USA. Prior to the start of the tournament, he scored a hat trick in a friendly match against Mexico, which was his first international goal.
