The name of Coe’s first album, “Penitentiary Blues,” was published in 1970. American record producer Shelby Singleton oversaw the publication of the album on SSS International Records, a company that specialized in country music throughout the ’60s and ’70s.
“Penitentiary Blues” takes cues from the music of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Charlie Rich, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Tony Joe White. Thom Jurek of Allmusic dubbed the album “redneck music” and “voodoo blues.”
