Career

During the summer of 1987, Duchovny took acting classes in New York while he was working on his Ph.D. Before returning to Yale for his role in “Working Girl” the next year, he got his acting start in a commercial for Löwenbräu beer. David had a guest appearance on “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” (1991), hosted Showtime’s “Red Shoe Diaries” (1992–1996), and as transsexual DEA agent Denise Bryson on three episodes of “Twin Peaks” (1990–1991).

An iconic role that Duchovny took on in 1993 on “The X-Files” was that of Special Agent Fox “Spooky” Mulder. Seasons 10 and 11 of the Fox series resurfaced in 2016 and 2018, respectively, after the show had ended in 2002. Two feature films, “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (2008) and “The X-Files: Fight the Future” (1998), were based on the series.

Duchovny decided he didn’t want to be a regular after season 7, and he only had a dozen or so appearances in seasons 8 and 9. When “TV Guide” released their 2004 list of the “50 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends,” Mulder was ranked #7.

Earning $150,000 per episode for the first three seasons of The X-Files was David. That comes up to $3.6 million annually for a 24-episode season. That amounts to approximately $7 million annually after accounting for inflation. Gillian Anderson and David were both making $240,000 per episode by the fourth season. A 24-episode season would cost $5.76 million. When converted to today’s dollars after inflation, that is equivalent to $10 million.

In 1999, David went after 20th Century Fox in a lawsuit, alleging that the studio had deceived him by underselling the affiliate rights to “The X-Files” and pocketing the money. An upfront payment of $20 million resolved the litigation.

Cast members David and Gillian received $4 million apiece for their roles in the original X-Files film. The second picture brought in about $6 million for each of them.

One of Duchovny’s 2007 television returns was to the role of novelist Hank Moody on Showtime’s “Californication.” Evan Handler, Pamela Adlon, and Natascha McElhone were among the show’s co-stars during its seven seasons. As he did while starring in “Aquarius” (2015–2016) on NBC, Duchovny served as the show’s executive producer.

The albums “Hell or Highwater” (2015) and “Every Third Thought” (2018) were published by David after he started playing guitar in 2011. All twenty-four of the albums’ tracks were written by him, and he also played guitar and sang lead. For each album, Duchovny toured the United States and Europe. A portion of the earnings from “Every Third Thought” went to the D’Addario Foundation, a charitable organization that promotes music education.

After its 2015 publication, Duchovny’s debut novel, “Holy Cow: A Modern-Day Dairy Tale,” peaked at #15 on the “New York Times” Best Seller List. In 2016 he released “Bucky Fcking Dent,” then in 2018 he released “Miss Subways: A Novel,” following his debut. If you were looking for the top books of 2016, “Time Out New York” included “Bucky Fcking Dent” on their list. The year 2021 will see the release of “Truly Like Lightning: A Novel,” David’s fourth book.
