Producer Steven Bochco was casting for “L.A. Law” (a new NBC legal drama) in 1986 and was looking for bright young lawyers. David was offered a staff writing role on the sitcom From the Hip by Bochco after reading his script. Concerned that his venture into television writing wouldn’t be sustainable, David first resisted leaving his law profession.
David was promoted to the roles of story editor and co-producer by the second season of the show. Executive producer was his title by 1989. Two Emmys for Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series went to Kelley for his work on L.A. Law. “Dougie Houser, M.D.” was co-created by Bochco and Kelley in 1992. They also co-founded David E. Kelley Productions that year; the company soon signed up with CBS for television productions.
“Picket Fences” was the first series produced by David E. Kelley and ran for four seasons, airing a total of 88 episodes. Picket Fences was nominated for fourteen Emmys. His 1994 CBS sitcom “Chicago Hope” ran for six seasons and featured 141 episodes.
