Muir interned at Syracuse’s WTVH-TV while he was a high school student, and that was his first taste of broadcast journalism. Afterwards, he was a reporter and anchor for the channel from 1994 to 2000. Muir became well-known early in his term for his findings on the Yitzhak Rabin killing that he obtained from Israel. He left WTVH to work as a reporter and anchor for Boston’s WCVB-TV, where he stayed until 2003. His in-depth reporting on the plot the hijackers followed in the days preceding the 9/11 attacks garnered him praise at that station.
Muir became a part of ABC News in the summer of 2003 and ran the nightly news program “World News Now” in addition to the morning show “World News This Morning.” Midway through 2007, he took over as host of “World News Saturday,” and later that year, he co-anchored the newsmagazine show “Primetime.” In 2012, Muir took over as weekend anchor and main fill-in for Diane Sawyer on “ABC World News Tonight,” the primetime evening news program of the network. In the spring of the subsequent year, “ABC World News Tonight” surpassed all other evening newscasts in terms of viewership in the US. While Hurricane Katrina was making landfall in 2005, he remained in New Orleans to cover the crisis as it unfolded from inside the Superdome. Muir covered the 2007 Hamas coup from within the Gaza Strip, and the following year he reported from the Israeli-Lebanon border during the Lebanon War. In the years that followed, he covered stories in Haiti, Peru, and the Ukraine, among other locations, and he traveled to the Gulf of Mexico on many occasions to look into the BP oil disaster. In 2011, Muir covered the Egyptian Revolution from Tahrir Square and the Fukushima nuclear disaster and tsunami from his base in Japan. He then became one of ABC News’ top reporters for the 2016 US presidential campaign and hosted coverage of the tragic school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, and Aurora, Colorado, the following year.
