From an early age, Brazile was intrigued by politics. As a child, she would read the morning paper and would frequently lend a hand at neighborhood events. A federal holiday honoring the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. was established in part due to Brazile’s financial support of the King Foundation. During the 1976 Democratic presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter, Brazile donated her services. In 1984, she was a part of the Jesse Jackson campaign. In 1988, she was Dick Gephardt’s field director. During the 1990s, Brazile served as Eleanor Holmes Norton’s chief of staff and press secretary.
Brazile was an advisor during Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996 presidential campaigns. In 2000, she managed Al Gore’s presidential campaign. In her day, she managed a major party and was the first African-American woman to do so. After that, she served from 2005 to 2009 on the board of directors for the Louisiana Recovery Authority.
