Career

When Oda sent in an entry to “Wanted!” in 1992, he was just 17 years old. That was the beginning of his career. Among his many accolades was second place at the Tezuka Awards, which he received for his entry. As a result, Oda was able to secure a position as an assistant to Shinobu Kaitani on the anime series Suizan Police Gang, which landed him a job at the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. At Masaya Tokuhiro, he went on to work on “Jungle King Tar-Chan” and “Mizu no Tomedachi.” Oda started helping out Nobuhiro Watsuki on “Rurouni Kenshin” while he was just 19 years old. At the time, Oda was one of the young manga artists to win the Hop Step Award.

The two one-shot stories with pirate themes were developed by Oda while he was collaborating with Watsuki. Two of them appeared in different magazines; Weekly Shonen Jump and Akamaru Jump. ‘Romance Dawn’ was one of the stories that introduced the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy; ‘One Piece’ would later include this character. ‘One Piece’ did not become a serialization that appeared in ‘Weekly Shonen Jump’ until 1997. It shot to the top of Japan’s manga popularity charts. On top of that, it has surpassed all other manga series in terms of sales. Over four hundred fifty million copies had been printed by the end of 2019.

Furthermore, there are ‘One Piece’ volumes that have shattered publishing records in Japan. As an example, the greatest original print run of any manga was 2.85 million copies for volume 56. The third volume in the series broke the Japanese record for greatest initial print run of any genre of book—not alone manga—with three million copies. Multiple subsequent collections of his work have shattered these records. The first printing of volume 67 was 4.05 million in 2012. On the 41st anniversary of the Japan Cartoonists Association Award, Oda took home the top prize a year down the road.

Film adaptations of the manga series “One Piece” have been in the works for some time. “Strong World” or “One Piece Film: Strong World” is another name for the tenth installment in the series. Oda created about 120 drawings while brainstorming ideas for the 2009 film. Oda was certain that Mr. Children sang the film’s theme song as well. Moviegoers were given a bonus chapter of the manga by Oda to go along with the film. Oda has worked alongside Akira Toriyama, who made “Dragon Ball” and was an influence on Oda’s work, throughout his career. They worked together on a crossover titled “Cross Epoch” in 2007. Additionally, in 2013, the two collaborated on character designs for the computer game “Giant Crusher.”
