Sri Gaura Purnima is the auspicious manifestation day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, also known by His golden complexion as Gauranga. According to the scriptures, the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna manifested as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and taught the significance of devotion to Lord Krishna through the chanting of the sacred names of God, known as the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.
In 1486 AD (1407 Shakabda), he appeared in Sridham Mayapur as the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra and Srimati Sachidevi on Phalguni Purnima, the full moon day of Phalguna (Feb-March). His parents named Him Nimai because He was born in the courtyard of His father’s home beneath a Nimba (neem) tree. This celebration also signifies the start of the New Year for Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
