Career

With Shane Smith and Suroosh Alvi, Gavin co-founded the magazine “Vice” in 1994. He was an editor there and was dubbed “the Godfather of hipsterdom.” In his time at “Vice,” he penned pieces such as “The VICE Guide to Happiness” and “The VICE Guide to Picking Up Chicks.”

While at VICE, he co-wrote two books: “The Vice Guide to Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll” and “Vice Dos and Don’ts: 10 Years of VICE Magazine’s Street Fashion.” The author of the 2003 “New York Times” piece characterized his political leanings as being “closer to a white supremacist’s.” “The Vice Guide to Travel” featured McInnes and comedian David Cross in China in 2006.

Reasons for McInnes’ departure from “Vice” in 2007 included a lack of collaboration. He allegedly received a substantial sum of money, maybe $10–$20 million, in exchange for his resignation. That’s a lot of money, but “Vice” was theoretically worth $5.7 billion when he left. Gavin would have been technically a billionaire at that level. Additionally, he would have probably pocketed fifty to one hundred million dollars from the several investment rounds. The bright side is that “Vice” was supposedly on the verge of bankruptcy by mid-2023, meaning that the $5.7 billion valuation would finally crumble.

Following his financial success, Gavin established StreetCarnage.com and co-founded the advertising agency Rooster NY. “How to Piss in Public” was his 2012 book. Following the publication of his transphobic essay, Rooster requested that he step down as chief content officer. He became the helm of Compound Media’s “The Gavin McInnes Show” in June 2015. He started penning frequent pieces for “The Rebel Media,” a far-right magazine published in Canada. Prominent conspiracy theory broadcasts featuring McInnes include Infowars’ “The Alex Jones Show.” His tenure at “Taki Magazine” spanned 2015–2017. After joining CRTV in August 2017, he departed from rebel media. His 2017 podcast “Get Off My Lawn” debuted on September 22.

In terms of his movie credits, he is responsible for directing, writing, and producing the short film “Sophie Can Walk.” The short film “Are Women as Horny as Men?” was written and directed by him, and he also appeared in, produced, and wrote the screenplay for, “How to Be a Man.” A documentary on his stand-up comedy tour, “The Brotherhood of the Traveling Rants,” was directed by him in 2013. As Mark McCarthy, he was in the 2013 film “How to Be a Man.” Season 3 of “Kenny vs. Spenny,” a Canadian reality TV show, featured Gavin in 2010. Not only that, but he had an appearance on “Aqua Teen Hunger Force.” Beyond that, you might recognize him from his appearances in “Creative Control,” “Soul Quest Overdrive,” and “One More Time.”

Twitter permanently terminated McInnes and the Proud Boys’ account in August 2018 for violating their rules against violent extremist groups. Gavin acted out the assassination of socialist politician Inejiro Asanuma in 1960 a few months down the road. Following a water bottle being thrown at them, the Proud Boys were shown on camera physically assaulting a protester. The Proud Boys were characterized by the FBI as a radical group “with ties to white nationalists.”

According to immigration officials, McInnes was denied entry to Australia because “he was judged to be of bad character.” As of December 10, 2018, YouTube banned McInnes. After being compelled to alter the name due to copyright issues, he launched Censored.TV in 2019 from FreeSpeechTV. Along with his primary podcast, “Get Off My Lawn,” the platform also contains “Free Speech with Gavin McInnes.”

“I love being white and I think it’s something to be very proud of,” McInnes stated in 2003. Protecting our culture is important to me. The time has come to seal off all immigration and force everyone within to adopt the white, English-speaking, Western way of life. Racism and white nationalist rhetoric are two charges against him that have surfaced frequently. He has insulted Susan Rice and Jada Pinkett Smith with racist remarks on his podcast. He was cited in 2016 as having contributed to “Black Lies Matter,” a critical analysis of the BLM movement. In 2017, Gavin expressed his support for Holocaust deniers and other remarks that were anti-Semitic. “Ten Things I Hate About Jews,” a Rebel video he produced, was later renamed “Ten Things I Hate About Israel.”

He opposes Islam. An example of one of McInnes’ many sexist remarks is her claim that “95 percent of women would be happier at home.” “Salon,” “Independent Journal Review,” “Chicago-Sun Times,” “The Hollywood Reporter,” “Slate,” and many others have charged him of sexism. It was in an October 2013 panel interview that Gavin made the statements that “people would be happier if women would stop pretending to be men” and that feminism “has made women less happy.”
