Career
In college, Strait became a member of the band Stoney Ridge, which he later rechristened The Ace in the Hole Band after taking the lead vocals. They became well-known in Texas very fast and started opening for famous acts like the Texas Playboys. The chance to record many singles finally came their way. But the band never really took off, and George continued to work the ranch with his family.
He nearly gave up when he received negative responses from every big record label he contacted; nevertheless, he persuaded his wife to keep going. Finally, MCA extended a recording deal offered to him in 1981. He debuted that year with the release of “Unwound.” After its tremendous success—it peaked at number six on the country charts—George released his debut album, “Strait Country.” One of the many reasons the CD had an effect was that it demonstrated the continued viability of classic country music in the contemporary world. At one point, the style was leaning more toward pop.
It was on his 1982 sophomore album, “Strait From the Heart,” that Strait had his breakthrough hit, “Fool Hearted Memory.” At this time, he began making his live performance debut. Despite continuing to crank out several songs, George Strait broke relations with the media and ceased doing interviews following the terrible death of his 13-year-old daughter.
After a string of successful albums in the late ’80s, he experimented with new sounds with the highly regarded 1990 album “Livin’ It Up.” Following the release of his album “Holding My Own,” he was in the critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful film “Pure Country.” Despite the film’s box office bomb, Strait’s most commercially successful album to date was the soundtrack.
In 1997, Strait established the George Strait Country Music Festival following the release of numerous other successful albums. Over the following four years, Strait would play at the festival again, this time among other legendary country music artists. His 1999 album “Always Never the Same” came out around this time. In 2000, Strait’s career took a slight downturn when his self-titled album failed to achieve platinum status. Strait would keep releasing albums that were reasonably successful using his tried-and-true country music formula in the years to come.
By 2009, Strait has more number-one hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs list than anybody else, surpassing Conway Twitty’s record of forty. George currently has more number-one hits than any musician in the history of recorded music with sixty. According to Billboard, Straight was named the best country musician of the last quarter of a century in 2010. George was honored with Billboard’s Legend of Live award in 2013, which is given to the top performer in the concert business according to their success on the Boxscore chart and box office. In 2012, Straight revealed what would be his last tour, titled “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.” At Arlington, Texas’s AT&T Stadium, the last performance drew 104,793 spectators, making it the biggest indoor concert in North America by far.
