Career

Famous Iranian singer Faegheh goes under the stage name Googoosh. Her numerous songs and award-winning performances in films like “Bita” in 1973 propelled the Iranian pop singer and actress to popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. Her extraordinary fashion sense was interpreted by orthodox Iranians as a rebellion.

Her father saw that she could imitate famous singers when she was three years old and urged her to pursue a career in show business. In the 1970s, Googoosh catapulted Iranian pop music to unprecedented heights of popularity and success. One of the most famous Iranian celebrities, Googoosh is known for her unique hairstyles and hip-elegant style, which many Iranian women try to imitate.

From upbeat, classic pop from the ’60s and ’70s to mournful, ecstatic ballads about love and loss reminiscent of the chanson style popularized by artists like Édith Piaf, it covered a whole range of musical styles. Even those who don’t speak Persian enjoy her music. Spanish singer Julio Iglesias performed the song “Bavar Kon.”

She starred in Iran’s most commercially successful film of all time. In addition, Googoosh was a huge hit with the royal family, including Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s wife and children. At the 17th birthday celebration for Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, she performed.

Googoosh remained in Iran for a long time following the revolution, even though it represented many things that the movement aimed to eradicate, such Western influence. Following the revolution, her performances and the material she created were both outlawed. She was allowed to go outside of Iran during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami, which was also the last time she performed publicly.

Googoosh finally made an appearance in public in 2000, after a 21-year hiatus, much to the delight of their devoted fan base. In July of 2000, the Googoosh Comeback Tour got underway. She went on to perform before sold-out crowds in cities including Toronto and Dubai as part of her global tour, which culminated in March 2001 at Dubai’s Nowruz event, where over 12,000 people were in attendance.

Iranians made the long journey across the Persian Gulf to witness her perform in Dubai, making about 70% of the over 20,000 concertgoers. Also, the two Dubai gigs were the culmination of the tour, and Googoosh was meant to be getting ready to return to Iran around that time.

With the excuse of “creative disagreements,” she broke off ties with Mehrdad Asemani in January 2009 and started working with her present management group in March 2009. During the Persian New Year festivities in Dubai on March 21 and 24, Googoosh performed.

Starting in 2011, she served as both the dean of the academy and a judge on Googoosh Music Academy, a popular singing competition and talent show that aired on the Iranian satellite channel Manoto 1 in London.

In February 2014, she disseminated a music video for the song “Behesht” in solidarity with Iran’s gay and lesbian community, who are fighting for equal rights despite ongoing threats of capital punishment. Consequently, she made history by speaking out against homophobia in Iran alongside other prominent Iranians.

On March 21, 2015, Googoosh released her seventh studio album, Aks-e Khosoosi (Private Portrait). The album featured eleven songs written by Googoosh band leader Babak Amini, Nickan Ebrahimi, and Babak Sahraee, among others. It’s only right that the CD opens with Che Ziba Bood, Varujan’s last song. Despite political and personal obstacles, Googoosh has maintained her status as a renowned figure for the past fifty years.
