Significance of Baba Gorakhnath
Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is the most significant Guru-related shrine. It is believed that Guru Gorakhnath visited the site in the 11th century BCE, where he performed puja and meditated for an extended period. The city’s name was derived from Guru Gorakhnath.
Guru Gorakshanath was regarded as the third Guru in the Nath Sampradaya, succeeding Mahendranath, his mentor, and Adinath, Mahendranath’s mentor. Before Adinath, the Nath Sampradaya is said to have had five gurus. Gorakshanath was the ninth of the nine gurus of the Nath cult, according to legends.
Gorakshanath is said to have resided in a number of caverns where he practised meditation, all of which are now converted into places of worship, and he is said to have passed away at the site of the Nath Mandir in Ganeshpuri, Maharashtra. Gorakhnath Gad is the name of a temple on Majarsubha hill in Ahmednagar District dedicated to the god Gorakhnath.
