Gordon made his directorial debut in 1988 with The Chocolate War, a film about a Catholic school kid who fights against the strict hierarchy, after leaving acting. Among his other works are the anti-war A Midnight Clear (1992), which follows a unit of American troops in the Ardennes in the days leading up to the Battle of the Bulge; Mother Night (based on a novel by Kurt Vonnegut); Waking the Dead; and The Singing Detective. On top of that, he was in the 2006 documentary Whose War? about the Iraq War and directed an episode or two of the miniseries Wild Palms. As a television director, he has worked on shows like Gideon’s Crossing, Dexter, The Bridge, House, and Fargo (seasons 2 and 3).

In the 1978 sequel to the smash hit Jaws, Gordon made his feature picture acting debut as the character of class clown Doug.
