Who Was Guru Ravidas?
Guru Ravidas was one of the most well-known and famous saints who was instrumental in establishing the Bhakti movement. Guru Ravidas was born in the Indian city of Banaras, Uttar Pradesh. He became renowned as a wise Sikh guru who was a remarkable philosopher, reformer, traveller, spiritual leader, and poet.
Rituals of Ravidas Jayanti
- All Gurudwaras are illuminated and special arrangements are made for the occasion. In honour of Guru Ravidas, prayer gatherings are held.
- The holy text of Ravidas, “Amritbani,” is read.
- At various locations, devotees carrying the portrait of Ravidas and reciting prayers participate in processions.
- In some locations, Nagar kirtan is performed by individuals dressed as Saint Ravidas. In addition, plays are organised to promote his beliefs.
Teachings of Guru Ravidas
As a follower of the Almighty Kabir Saheb, Saint Ravidas also disseminated divine teachings. Similarly to Guru Nanak Sahib, he advocated teachings such as how to merge with the Almighty, how to worship Him in order to unite with Him, the meaning of Almighty, etc. In light of Ravidas’s life, we can likewise find peace in the Almighty’s home.
