Career

Horacio had an interest in engineering while he was a resident of Argentina, but he didn’t think he’d thrive in the country. Established in 1977, he named his 80 square meter storefront the “factory.” As the sole employee, his initial task was to construct sturdy seats for a brand-new watering hole in town. After designing and building an F3 racer when he was 20 years old, Pagani relocated to Italy in the early 1980s to realize his dream of creating a supercar.

Meeting with Giulio Alfieri, chief technical director of Lamborghini, Horacio was engaged to do menial tasks like sweeping after he succeeded in upgrading the bodywork of Renault’s race cars. To become head engineer, Pagani worked his way up the corporate ladder. In 1985, he constructed the Countach Evoluzione, which was “the first car entirely made of composite materials.” In 1987, Horacio took out a loan to purchase an enclave of his own after Lamborghini declined to purchase one that would have helped with the manufacture of carbon parts for the Countach Evoluzione.

After Pagani departed Lamborghini in 1991, he established the carbon fiber composites manufacturing consultancy Modena Design.

In the year that followed, Horacio set up Pagani Automobili Modena and started developing the Zonda; he finished it seven years later. He created the Huayra in 2011, which was christened after the Incan deity Huayra-tata, the “Father of Wind.” A Pagani Huarya now would cost between $3 million and $4 million:

Horacio received the Compasso d’Oro (Golden Cross) for “Design for mobility” from the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale in June 2022. According to its website, the Compasso d’Oro is “the world’s oldest and most distinguished design award.” Commenting on the honor, Pagani stated:

At Milan’s National Science & Technology Museum, Pagani Automobili debuted their latest model, the Utopia, in September 2022. A total of 99 Utopias will ever be manufactured, with an initial price tag of $2.2 million each vehicle.
