Career

The Oakland Raiders picked Howie in the 1981 NFL Draft, and he started playing in the league that year. This marked the start of his thirteen-year tenure with the club, during which he had jersey number 75. With time on his side, Howie was able to rack up a slew of honors, such as Defensive Lineman of the Year by the NFLPA AFC and NFL Alumni. The George S. Halas Trophy was bestowed upon him in 1985. The 1984 Super Bowl was won by the Raiders. Long has made it to the Pro Bowl four times in a row by 1986. The Raiders’ defense was also the best in the AFC at the time.

Throughout his career, Long accumulated more than ninety-one sacks. When he retired, he was a seasoned player for the Raiders, having guided the franchise through its move from Oakland to Los Angeles and became the “last man standing” from the original Oakland roster. One of Howie’s trademark moves while playing in the NFL was the “rip,” a rapid uppercut that would release the opposing blocker’s hold. By the time he called it quits in 1993, Long had joined the likes of Curley Culp and Lawrence Taylor as legendary members of a “dream” defensive front.

Long had a prolific action film career after retiring. “Firestorm,” “Broken Arrow,” “3000 Miles to Graceland,” and “That Thing You Do!” were among these. Along with that, he was in countless advertisements for companies including Honda, Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Nike, Coors Light, Radio Shack, and many more.

Afterwards, he began contributing to Fox’s NFL coverage in the role of analyst. As a host of “Howie Long’s Tough Guys,” he became famous and received a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality in 1997. Plus, he penned the book “Football for Dummies.”
