Career

For his role as Ward Cleaver on “Leave it to Beaver” (1957–1963), Beaumont is most renowned. Beaumont, in his role as Cleaver, was ranked twenty-eighth among TV Guide’s fifty greatest fathers of all time.

Beginning in 1931, he appeared in theaters, nightclubs, and on radio, launching his acting career.

He began making cameo appearances in scores of films in 1940, the most of which were uncredited little parts.

His role as private investigator Michael Shayne spanned five films from 1946 to 1947. In 1950, he lent his voice to a short film called A Date with Your Family.

He had guest appearances on numerous shows in the 1950s, including as Superman: Adventures in the West and The Lone Ranger.

The first episode of the 1957 sitcom Leave it to Beaver featured him as Ward Cleaver. Due to the show’s initial airing popularity, ABC decided to carry the series. Beaumont took up directing duties for multiple episodes in Season 3.

After his run on Leave it to Beaver ended, he went on to star in a slew of stage shows and TV cameos.

As a writer, he was also rather successful, selling screenplays, radio scripts, and short stories. He left the entertainment profession following a devastating stroke in 1972.

Hunter, Mark, and Kristy were the couple’s offspring. His 2020 daughter compared her dad to Leave it to Beaver’s Ward Cleaver, saying he was “just like” him.

Prior to their 1974 divorce, Beaumont and Adams were wed for 33 years. She wed Fred Doty again later on.

A heart attack took Beaumont’s life on May 14, 1982. He was cremated.
