Career

At the tender age of four, Mathers made an uncredited appearance in the screwball Western “Son of Paleface.” For Halloween, he portrayed a trick-or-treater on an episode of “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.” In the years that followed, he appeared in films such as “This is My Love,” which co-starred Linda Darnell and Dan Duryea; “The Seven Little Foys,” which co-starred Bob Hope; and “The Trouble with Harry,” a dark comedy by Alfred Hitchcock, in which he played a young kid who finds a corpse outside his house. He also played a role in the heist thriller “The Shadow on the Window,” in which he saw his mother brutally attacked.

Mathers’ breakout role came in 1957 with “Leave it to Beaver,” in which he played Wally’s younger brother and the son of suburbanites June and Ward Cleaver, “Beaver” Cleaver. It was Mathers’ honesty—that he would have preferred to be at his Club Scout meeting than at the audition—that reportedly landed him the part. For six years, Mathers was the voice of the character in all 234 episodes. The arrangement allowed him to receive a set percentage of a television program’s merchandise sales, making him the first child actor to do so.

With almost 80 countries and 40 languages airing the show, “Leave it to Beaver” clearly hasn’t run out of steam. Barbara Billingsley, who played Mathers’ mother in the show, was also a friend of Mathers’.

For a while after entering puberty, Mathers put acting on hold to focus on his high school activities. He was the band leader for Beaver and the Trappers while he was a student at Sherman Oaks, California’s Notre Dame High School. He enlisted in the US Air Force Reserve in 1966 while still a student; he stayed on after he graduated and eventually became a Sergeant. In 1973, he continued his education by enrolling at Berkeley, where he earned a BA in philosophy.

After working as a real estate developer and a loan officer for commercial banks, Mathers got back into acting in 1978. In the same year, he had guest appearances on “Flying High” and featured in a Kansas City production of “Boeing, Boeing” alongside Tony Dow, who he had worked with on “Leave it to Beaver.” That was followed by a year and a half of touring with Dow in a “So Long, Stanley” performance. In 1981, he was both a disk DJ in Anaheim, California, and an actor in the television fantasy picture “The Girl, the Gold Watch and Dynamite,” directed by Lee Purcell and starring Philip MacHale.

“Still the Beaver,” a 1983 TV reunion film starring Mathers and much of the original ensemble, saw Mathers return to his position as the Beaver. After the film’s success, a new series based on the Beaver was created and shown on the Disney Channel in 1984. TBS and broadcast syndication also picked it up. Following a 1989 rebranding to “The New Leave it to Beaver,” the show aired 101 episodes. A guest appearance by Mathers as the Beaver on “The Love Boat” occurred about the same period.
