Career

“My Own Private Idaho,” which debuted in 1991, was partially shot in Seattle and Portland, and it was Jim’s big screen debut after he started his acting career onstage in Seattle. Moving to Los Angeles, he made cameo appearances in 1992 on ABC’s “The Wonder Years” and in the film “Diggstown.” Caviezel opted to play Wyatt Earp’s younger brother Warren in the 1994 film “Wyatt Earp” rather than accept a scholarship at the well-known Juilliard School in New York. Jim appeared as a guest star on the police thriller “Murder, She Wrote” on CBS and co-starred in the 1995 CBS Western miniseries “Children of the Dust” alongside Sidney Poitier and Farrah Fawcett. His roles in the baseball comedic “Ed” and the action-thriller “The Rock,” which he co-starred in the following year, brought in a combined $335.1 million. Towards the end of the decade, Caviezel had parts in “G.I. Jane” (1997), “The Thin Red Line” (1998), and “Ride with the Devil” (1999); for his performance in “The Thin Red Line,” he was nominated for a Most Promising Actor plaque from the Chicago Film Critics Association.

Along with “The Count of Monte Cristo” (2002), “Frequency” (2000), and “Pay It Forward” (2000), Jim had a prolific acting career in the early 2000s. His filming schedule for “Frequency” prevented him from completing the 2000 film “X-Men,” in which he was supposed to play Cyclops/Scott Summers. Cast as Jesus Christ in the 2003 biblical epic “The Passion of the Christ,” Caviezel suffered from frostbite, pneumonia, a dislocated shoulder, a 14-inch wound on his back from a whip, and two lightning strikes while filming. In 2018, Jim revealed to the “Catholic Courier” that he had to undergo two heart surgeries due to the physical strain of filming; he will play the same character in the upcoming sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ.” “Outlander,” “Long Weekend,” and “The Stoning of Soraya M.” were released in 2008, and after completing the film that nearly killed him, Caviezel starred in “Unknown” and “Déjà Vu” in 2006. Next, he made an appearance in the 2009 miniseries “The Prisoner.” In 2011, he made a triumphant return to television, this time as John Reese, a former CIA operative, in all 103 episodes of “Person of Interest.” Jim was nominated for a People’s Choice Award in both 2014 and 2016 for his work on the show.

In addition to his role as “Person of Interest,” Caviezel has starred in several films and TV shows, including the action-thriller “Transit,” the 2013 thriller “Escape Plan” (co-starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger), the 2013 historical drama “Savannah,” and the 2014 biopic “When the Game Stands Tall,” in which he played the role of real-life football coach Bob Ladouceur. Jim provided narration for the 2016 religious movies “The Face of Mercy” and “Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism.” David Boreanaz replaced him after he left the CBS drama “SEAL Team” the following year, which had been cast as the lead. He cited creative differences as the reason for his departure. Two of Caviezel’s recent films, “Paul, Apostle of Christ” (2018) and “The Ballad of Lefty Brown” (2017), both feature Westerns. In the same year, he narrated “Onyx, Kings of the Grail” and portrayed a doctor in “Running for Grace.” James played the role of Tim Ballard in the 2020 biopic “Sound of Freedom,” and he was a star in the 2019 action flick “Infidel.” The latter was based on real events.
