He and his friend Malik started the rap group Draftpick when he was just 12 years old. As their citywide tour continued, the lads made an appearance at the Apollo Theater for Amateur Night, where they won for two weeks in a row. Priority Records signed James and Malik shortly thereafter. Later on, they dropped the track “Play Ruff,” which featured Tracey Lee and Memphis Bleek.
