History behind Karva Chauth

Karva means ‘pot’ in Hindi, and Chauth means ‘fourth’. The fast may have started as a prayer for a bountiful crop in the wheat-eating Northwestern region of India, as big earthen pots for storing wheat are sometimes called Karwas. This event is claimed to have started when women began praying for the safe return of their husbands who had gone off to fight wars in other regions. It is also thought to be observed to commemorate the end of the harvest season. Regardless of its roots, the holiday provides an opportunity to enhance familial bonds.

Karva Chauth is linked to a number of mythical stories. One of the most well-known is that of Queen Veervati, the sole sister of seven brothers who was tricked about the moon’s rise, prompting her to break her fast early. Her husband, the king, died as a result of this. A goddess, however, urged her to repeat the fast and as a result her husband’s life was restored.
