Johnson was awarded most valuable player after helping the Trojans win the Cotton Bowl Classic in 1995. He went on to play a key role in the 1996 Rose Bowl victory for the Trojans.

The New York Jets selected Johnson as the first overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft. When the Jets lost the AFC Championship Game against the Broncos, they were within one game of the Super Bowl.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers acquired Johnson in a trade during the spring of 2000. He stayed with the squad for a total of four years, from 1999 to 2003. In 2002, Johnson had a breakout season as the Buccaneers went 12-4 and defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. In the regular season, he had 76 receptions for 1,088 yards and five touchdowns; in the Super Bowl, he had six receptions for 69 yards.
