In 1984, Les established the band Primus, whose initial name was Primate. Claypool and a drum machine were the only instruments in Primate when he began. Before they became Primus in 1988, he was accompanied on guitar by a friend and they had a rotating cast of guest drummers. For a long time, Claypool was thought of as the band’s leader and the one who inspired them to add funk to other genres.

With the release of their third album “Pork Soda” in 1993, Primus solidified their reputation as a “weird band” and started to attract substantial public notice and radio in 1989. Not long after its release, it entered the top ten in the United States. Not only did the band perform at Woodstock ’94, but they also headlined Lollapalooza in 1993. Playing on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Late Show with David Letterman” in 1995, Primus was a popular act.

Midway through 2003, the band returned after a sabbatical that began in 2000. Primus embarked on a two-month tour in October 2003, with each event featuring two sets. After continuing their tour into 2004, they put out the DVD “Hallucino-Genetics: Live 2004.” Oct. 17, 2006, saw the release of their debut greatest hits CD, “They Can’t All Be Zingers,” and the subsequent “Primus: The Beat a Dead Horse Tour 2006.” In 2008, the band got back on the road. In 2010, they played a few shows and released an album, “Green Naugahyde” in 2011. The band’s “Primus & The Chocolate Factory with Fungi Ensemble,” their eighth studio album, came out in October 2014. They started touring with Mastodon in 2018 after releasing “The Desaturating Seven” in 2017.

One popular cultural reference to Primus is the film “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.” Furthermore, they recorded the theme music for the popular program “South Park” in 1997, and it has stayed the same ever since. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, a 1999 video game, featured the music “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” by Primus.

Claypool is known for his work with a number of bands, including Oysterhead, Blind Illusion, Sausage, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains, Duo de Twang, and his solo recordings. In 1996, Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel released their debut solo album titled “Highball with the Devil.” Les was also responsible for producing and engineering the album. He contributed vocals, bass, drums, and guitar to the majority of the songs. The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, led by Les Claypool, was established in May of 2000. A 2002 album by the Frog Brigade was “Purple Onion.”

One of Claypool’s subsequent solo albums, 2006’s “Of Whales and Woe,” has the song “Robot Chicken.” Les and his backing band—which included Mike Dillon, Sherik, Gabby La La, and Paulo Baldi—took a cross-country tour to promote the album’s release. Les Claypool dubbed the ensemble “Les Claypool’s Fancy Band,” and they went on tour in 2006 and 2007. Les went on a solo tour and a Primus tour in 2008. “Of Fungi and Foe” was his second solo album, and it came out on March 17, 2009. A number of Claypool’s tracks can be heard in the Wii video game “Mushroom Men.” Touring in 2010 with Matisyahu and the English trio HOT HEAD SHOW was his official first year.

The Claypool Lennon Delirium was Les’s 2016 partnership with Sean Lennon. Much anticipation awaited their debut that year at Bonnaroo. They debuted in 2016 with the release of “Monolith of Phobos,” and in 2019 with the release of “South of Reality,” their second studio album. In June 2018, Mayor John Cranley of Cincinnati proclamated a “Les Claypool Day,” and Les was presented with the proclamation that same night at the Riverbend Music Center during the Primus performance.
