After starring on the tennis court for the Longhorns in 2022, Sun made the transition to the professional circuit. The women’s tennis team she was a part of helped UT Austin win the 2021 NCAA title. In May of 2022, she made her main-draw debut on the WTA Tour at the Morocco Open and won her maiden major ITF title in doubles at the Saint-Gaudens Open alongside Fernanda Contreras.
Sun won her maiden WTA 1000 title at the 2024 Dubai Championships and made her Grand Slam debut at that year’s Australian Open. She was a doubles and singles champion at the W100 Bonita Springs tournament in Florida and represented New Zealand in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup. In June of 2024, she made it to the top 125.
Sun won her first match against a player ranked in the top ten in 2024 when she made her Wimbledon debut, defeating eighth seed Zheng Qinwen in the opening round. By making it this far, she became the first woman from New Zealand to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon during the Open Era. She has risen to number 55 in the WTA rankings and will face Donna Vekić in the quarterfinals.
