The time it took McKayla to get exposure to other cultures was little. She won the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championship on the vault in Tokyo, Japan.
A career-high point for McKayla came in the 2012 Summer Olympics when she competed for the United States gymnastics team and brought home a gold medal and a silver medal for her vaulting efforts. Additionally, McKayla was expected to win gold in the vault, but she was defeated after two ill-advised landings, dropping her to second place.
It was clear from McKayla’s attitude on the podium that she was not pleased with her silver medal from the Olympics. With the caption “McKayla is not impressed,” the photo actually went popular online. ‘Sports Illustrated’ magazine featured her and the rest of the US women’s gymnastics team on its July 2012 cover.
She had to step away from gymnastics for a spell after injuring herself in September 2012 during the Kellogg’s Tour in Ontario on the uneven bars. She was a judge at the Miss America Pageant and a member of the ‘Thirty Seconds to Mars’ dance crew in their ‘Up in the Air’ music video during this time. Adidas also got her stamp of approval.
Despite suffering an injury and a loss at the Olympics, she trained tirelessly and improved her skills to take home the vaulting gold medal at the 2013 World Championship.
Despite her desire to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, McKayla revealed that she would be retiring from gymnastics owing to health concerns; she had knee surgery in 2014.
The 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning American gymnastics team, of which McKayla Maroney was a part, will live on in perpetuity.
‘Hart of Dixie’ (2012–2015), ‘Bones’ (2013), and ‘Superstore’ (2016) are some of her acting credits.
