Career
Chomsky had been an assistant professor at MIT since 1955. He held the positions of associate professor and visiting professor at Columbia University after two years of service. The first book written by Chomsky on the subject of language was titled “Syntactic Structures.” He was a fellow at Princeton, New Jersey’s Institute for Advanced Study from 1958 to 1959, thanks to the National Science Foundation.
The scathing critique of “Verbal Behavior” by B. F. Skinner that Chomsky wrote in 1959 further cemented his place in academia. Following this, he and Morris Halle, another linguist, co-founded the linguistics graduate program at MIT. Chomsky was a full professor with tenure at the university beginning in 1961. This was the decade in which he released several linguistic works, such as “Aspects of the Theory of Syntax” and “Cartesian Linguistics: A Chapter in the History of Rationalist Thought.”
During the 1960s, Chomsky took part in multiple nationwide protests in which he strongly opposed the Vietnam War. “The Responsibility of Intellectuals,” an anti-war article he wrote for the New York Review of Books, brought him widespread renown as well. For those interested in his political writings, the essay can be found in his 1969 book “American Power and the New Mandarins.” “At War with Asia,” “The Backroom Boys,” “Peace in the Middle East?,” and “Counter-Revolutionary Violence: Bloodbaths in Fact & Propaganda,” a book he co-wrote with academic Edward S. Herman, were among other subsequent political works. Chomsky was an active participant in numerous activist groups, and he was a co-founder of the anti-war collective RESIST.
The United States’ intervention in international conflicts, such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Nicaraguan Contra War, was fiercely condemned by Chomsky even after the Vietnam War ended. Afterwards, in the early 2000s, he strongly opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the war on terror that followed. The United States’ imperialism, aggressive foreign policy, and mercenary capitalism are still Chomsky’s main points of criticism.
Chomsky’s reputation as an innovative linguist kept rising in the ’70s and ’80s. He persisted in expanding his biolinguistics research, which he said proves that language is a uniquely human trait passed down through generations. He also played a pivotal role in developing the theory of universal grammar and made significant contributions to transformational-generative grammar. Chomsky gave public speeches at prestigious institutions like Stanford University and the University of Cambridge, where he was honored with numerous honorary doctorate degrees. His other works in the field of language include “Reflections on Language” and “Studies on Semantics in Generative Grammar.”
