Career
The local radio station WEDC was seeking a news anchor, and Sajak learned about it via his broadcasting professor while he was a college student. After submitting his application, he was given the 6 a.m. time slot at the station. Sajak enlisted in the United States Army in 1968, during the Vietnam War. He was a military radio host while in the Army. “Good morning, Vietnam!” he would start each of his DJ sets with, mimicking Robin Williams’ iconic phrase from the film of the same name. Sajak was the afternoon host for a Nashville radio station in the early 1970s, from 3 to 5 p.m.
Sajak relocated to Los Angeles in the late ’70s in quest of acting jobs. In 1977, he quickly secured a permanent employment as a weatherman with KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.
“Wheel of Fortune” was offered to Pat by game show mogul Merv Griffin in 1981 to replace Chuck Woolery as host. Regrettably, NBC President Fred Silverman turned down the idea of employing Sajak because he was “too local.” Merv Griffin’s reaction was to cancel the program and hold off on filming any more episodes until Pat was recruited.
