Career

Pete started working as a reserve infantry officer in the U.S. Army National Guard and worked as an equities capital markets analyst at Bear Stearns after graduating from Princeton. As a member of the Minnesota National Guard, he served as an infantry platoon leader at Guantánamo Bay in 2004. Subsequently, he held similar positions in Baghdad and Samarra, and in Samarra, he was a civil-military operations officer. Both the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal were presented to Hegseth during his time serving in Iraq. Returning to active duty in 2012, he assumed the rank of captain.

Pete was a senior counterinsurgency instructor at the Counterinsurgency Training Center in Kabul after his deployment to Afghanistan. He joined the Individual Ready Reserve and eventually became a major. Following his time in Iraq, Hegseth had a short stint with the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research; he departed in 2007. From 2008 to 2012, he served as the executive director of Vets For Freedom, a political advocacy organization. He also established MN PAC in that year. Pete “spent a third of the PAC’s money on Christmas parties for families and friends,” according to an item in 2018’s “APM Reports.”

Concerned Veterans for America, an advocacy group supported by Charles and David Koch, had Hegseth as its executive director from 2012 to 2015. He paid his brother Philip, who got his bachelor’s degree in May 2015, almost $100,000 to work for the company. It is not illegal for private firms to employ family, according to Pete’s lawyer, and Philip met all the requirements for the public relations position. After the 2012 Republican National Convention in May, Hegseth decided he didn’t want to be a U.S. Senator from Minnesota and dropped out of the race.

His frequent air criticisms of Democrats and the media date back to his 2014 arrival as a Fox News contributor. He co-hosted the 2018 edition of the network’s “All-American New Year” with Donald Trump, and the show included a taped interview with the president. Talking about the 2020 election, Pete interviewed Rep. James Talarico of Texas in July 2021 and accused him of being dishonest, saying, “You have made a lot of money personally and you have enriched a lot of corporations with advertising by getting on here and spewing lies and conspiracy theories to folks who trust you.”

Pete Hegseth Personal Life

In August 2019, he tied the knot with his bride Jennifer Cunningham Rauchet. Prior to her 2014 marriage to him, Meredith Schwarz was his first wife. It was a sad ending to their five-year marriage; they filed for a divorce in 2009. In 2010, he wed Samantha Deering for the second time; the couple had three children together. Gwendolyn, whom she had with her present spouse Jennifer, and Gunner, Rex Brian, and Boone Hegseth are all his children.
