Career
Ray Rice was prepared to enter the 2008 NFL Draft by that point. He signed a two-year, $2.85 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens after being selected in the second round. The deal also included a signing bonus of $1.1 million. With 546 yards on the ground and 273 more in the air, Rice got the Ravens off to a good start.
After losing the starting job in 2008, Rice took over as the Ravens’ primary back in 2009. His 2009 season debut saw him sprint for 108 yards. The Steelers were one of his opponents in a game when he ran for 141 yards. He rushed for 1,339 yards that year. Ray had another great season after being named to the Pro Bowl in 2010, when he rushed for 1,220 yards and caught 556 passes for 556 more. In 2012, following another stellar 2011 year, Ray extended his contract by $35 million.
He played for the 2013 Super Bowl-winning Ravens team. That, alas, would turn out to be the pinnacle of his career. Ray had two underwhelming seasons in 2013 and 2014 after his NFL career was derailed by legal troubles. In 2018, Rice made it official that he was retiring from the NFL.
Ray Rice made a total of $38 million in compensation during his six-season stint in the NFL. He lost out on numerous seasons of play and perhaps millions of dollars in income due to his personal scandals, while he could have made a lot more if he hadn’t been involved.
Rice had his best season to date after the 2011 campaign, when he rushed for 2,068 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Ravens wasted no time in signing him to a five-year, $40 million deal, but that wasn’t the end of it. In the first year alone, Ray received $17 million—$15 million of which was a signing bonus—due to the frontloading of his deal. The deal was supposed to pay Rice $8 million annually once he signed it in 2012.
Ray received $25 million with the Ravens in salary and bonuses from 2012 to 2013. Upon the completion of the 2013–2014 season, Ray was granted an extra $7 million in option bonus funds.
