Robert left home eleven times over his career, each time with the fear that he might not return alive. Robert was an integral part of the operation that saved Marcus Luttrell’s life, Operation Red Wings.
The objective of Operation Red Wings was to apprehend Ahmad Shah.
Of the four SEALs sent on the mission, three were killed. There were eight special forces personnel and eight SEALs killed when a helicopter carrying their aid was shot down.
In 2009, the MV Maersk Alabama was hijacked by Somali pirates; O’Neill was also involved in the attempt to rescue Richard Phillips, an American commercial mariner and the ship’s captain.
A film based on the incident was shot and features Tom Hanks.
In a video for Leading Authorities, the speakers’ agency, Robert described the events surrounding his discovery that he would be a part of the rescue mission for Phillips. In the attack on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, which took place on May 2, 2011, O’Neill was a part of SEAL Team 6.
Robert was featured anonymously as the “Man Who Killed Bin Laden Is Screwed” in the February 2013 issue of Esquire. He was just called “the shooter” in the piece.
