Sun Records of Memphis, Tennessee, signed the Teen Kings in 1956. “Ooby Dooby” was re-recorded for the label and had some success, penetrating the Billboard Hot 100 at number 59. Along with Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Carl Perkins, and Sonny James, the Teen Kings went on tour. Orbison moved his attention to penning songs for other musicians once the trio broke up. For a short time, he was an employee at Acuff-Rose, a songwriting firm.

Orbison recorded “Uptown” in the mid-1960s as an endorser for Landmark Records. “Just the Forlorn (Know the Manner in which I Feel),” a song he co-wrote with Joe Melson, quickly became his most notable and consequential work. In the United Kingdom, the tune topped the charts, peaking at number two on the Board Hot 100.
