At 23, Sammy found himself drawn to the Cosa Nostra crime family, despite his father’s efforts to steer him away from a life of crime. His early criminal endeavors included petty stealing, carjacking, and armed robbery. More lucrative endeavors, like loansharking and racketeering, became his focus as time passed.
Running a shadow gambling enterprise out of the back room of an after-hours bar was one of Sammy’s more prominent ventures. Thanks to the success of this venture, he was able to become a club co-owner.
Furthermore, under the supervision of Joe Colombo, Sammy was involved in non-criminal operations. As part of an effort by the Italian-American Civil Rights League to address problems experienced by Italian-Americans, Colombo had him picket the FBI Manhattan offices.
