Tajiri began contributing to Game Freak, an arcade-focused magazine when he was seventeen years old. Over the years, Game Freak amassed a readership of over 10,000.

His Game Freak pal Ken Sugimori was a manga artist who would go on to create the drawings for every single Pokémon species.

Video game production became a focus for Satoshi, Junichi Masuda, and Ken Sugimori in 1989 when they transformed Game Freak.
