Shravan Putrada Ekadashi is observed on the ekadashi tithi that falls during the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of the moon) of the Shravan month in the Hindu calendar. On the English calendar, Putrada Ekadashi, also known as Pavitra Ekadashi and Pavitropana Ekadashi, occurs between July and August.

Putrada Ekadashi occurs before Aja Ekadashi and before Kamika Ekadashi (Shravan krishna paksha ekadashi) (Bhadra Krishna paksha). Shravan putrada ekadashi, like all other ekadashi, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and husband and wife practise this ekadashi vrat jointly in order to be blessed with a son. Vaishnavas, who are devotees of Vishnu, are especially fortunate on this day.

It is claimed that by keeping the putrada ekadashi fast in the month of Shravan, wishes for a male child can be fulfilled because the name “Putrada” means “provider of sons.” Except for the northern parts, where the Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is more popular, India celebrates Shravan Putrada Ekadashi with great fervour.

Shravan Putrada Ekadashi Rituals

  • The primary custom of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi is fasting. If the couple want to have a male kid, both spouses must observe the fast. Some couples practise a strict fast on this day, while others may fast partially. On Shravan Putrada Ekadashi, it is totally forbidden for everyone to eat grains, lentils, rice, onions, or anything else that isn’t vegetarian.
  • The vrat starts on “dashami,” and those who participate are only permitted to consume “saatvik” foods up to noon. On Dashami night, complete celibacy is maintained. From the ekadashi sunrise till the dawn of “dwadashi,” no food is consumed (12th day). After completing the puja procedures and giving food to a revered Brahmin, the fast is broken.
  • On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped wholeheartedly and with great passion. On the site of worship, the “Panchamrit” abhishek is done while the idol of Vishnu is preserved. The worshippers also present the Lord with colourful flowers, fruit, and other items needed for puja. The Shravan Putrada Ekadashi watcher stays vigil the entire night by praising Lord Vishnu with bhajans and devotional songs. In the evening, Lord Vishnu’s devotees also go to surrounding temples.
  • The well-known, five-day “Jhulan festival” begins on the Shravan Putrada Ekadashi as well. The idols of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha are positioned in a jhula that has been exquisitely adorned with creepers and flowers. The celebrations come to a conclusion on Shravan Poornima (full moon day).

Sifnificance of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi

In our Hindu culture, having a son is valued because he would take care of his parents when they are elderly. Even the ancestral rites known as “Shraddha”—which are meant to grant peace to the deceased forefathers—can only be carried out by the male kid. Hinduism observes 26 ekadashis, each of which has a distinct purpose. The Shravana Shukla Paksha ekadashi has the ability to endow a childless couple with a male offspring. Only two ekadashis, the other being the “Pausha Putrada Ekadashi,” are “givers of sons.”

In the “Bhavishya Purana,” King Yudhisthira and Sri Krishna discuss the significance of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi. Here, the Lord himself outlined the customs and advantages of keeping this revered fast. In addition to receiving the blessing of a son, devotees of Vishnu observe the Shravan Putrada Ekadashi to atone for their sins and find redemption.
