The birth of Bhagavan Shri Swaminarayan occurred on Ram Navami, Chaitra 9, Vikram Samvat 1837 (March 3, 1781 AD). Bhagavan Swaminarayan is revered as the Supreme Being and the leader of the Swaminarayan sect. The day of March 30th, 2023 has been designated as Bhagwan Swaminarayan Jayanti.

Rituals of Swaminarayan Jayanti

  • On the Swaminarayan Jayanti day, devotees observe nirjala upvaas (fasting without taking water).
  • The entirety of the day is commemorated by listening to accounts of Swaminarayan’s life, reading scriptures, and singing kirtans.
  • On this day, at 10.10 p.m. — the time of incarnation — all temples (mandirs) dedicated to Him perform a ‘arati’ of the child form of Swaminarayan.
  • They think that the Lord himself will come to Earth to bless their followers, therefore they set an idol of him in the cradle and adorn it to offer him a good greeting.

Significance of Swaminarayan Jayanti

Every year, the disciples of Swaminarayan celebrate this auspicious day with great zeal. Bhakti Mata, the mother of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, is reported to have given him the name Ghanshyam, while his father dubbed him Dharma Dev.

Swaminarayan Jayanti is observed during the Hindu month of Chaitra, on the ninth day of Navratri. He enlightened millions, and his eternal lessons continue to inspire countless individuals across the globe. He is also noted for propagating the Sanatan Dharma message.
