Who Was Tailang Swami?
The famous Hindu Yogi Tailang Swami spent the majority of his life in Varanasi (1607–1888 C.E.), where he exhibited extraordinary mystical abilities. Few of his devotees spoke of him as “The Walking Shiva of Varanasi” because of the widespread belief that he was an actual manifestation of the Hindu god Shiva. According to popular belief, Tailang Swami lived for close to two hundred and eighty years. Trailanga Swami and Telang Swami were two more names he went by.
The holy man Tailang Swami came into this world at the town of Holia, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. They named him Shivarama because his parents were devout followers of the Hindu god. Following the deaths of his parents at the age of forty, he withdrew from society and engaged in spiritual practice for twenty years. After that, he supposedly visited Prayag in 1733 and finally resided in Varanasi in 1737 while on a pilgrimage.
