Career

In her twenties, Leoni decided to become an actress. In 1988, she made her acting debut in “Angels 88,” a modernized take on “Charlie’s Angels.” She had a starring role, but production delays meant the show never aired. One year later, though, she landed a role on the NBC daytime drama “Santa Barbara.” She appeared in “Switch” (1991) and “A League of Their Own” (1992), both of which featured minor roles for her.

In 1992, she had a small role in the Fox comedy “Flying Blind.” In 1995, she had an appearance on “Frasier” before landing the lead part in the sitcom “The Naked Truth.” In order to land the part, she declined the opportunity to play Rachel Green on the critically acclaimed sitcom “Friends.” The first run of “The Naked Truth” was from 1995 until 1998. The 1995 film “Bad Boys” featured her as the principal female character, which was one of her largest roles to date.

After her stint on “The Naked Truth,” Leoni shifted her career focus to films. Actress “Deep Impact” (1998) featured her in the starring role. The picture was financially successful despite its lackluster critical reception. It wasn’t until 2001’s “Jurassic Park III” and 2000’s “Family Man” that she starring roles. The 2002 Woody Allen film “Hollywood Ending” featured her as the lead, and she was also in the supporting cast of “People I Know.”

She went on to star in “Spanglish” with Adam Sandler in 2004 and “Fun with Dick and Jane” with Jim Carrey in 2005, among her later films. A few films from the late aughts featured her, including “You Kill Me,” “The Smell of Success,” and “Ghost Town.” After being cast in the 2011 HBO comedy “Spring/Fall,” she was ultimately passed over for the role. After that, she made it big on CBS’s political drama “Madam Secretary.” Leoni was the main attraction from the show’s 2014 debut until its 2019 finale.
