Alfred Hitchcock approached Tippi Hedren in 1961 after seeing her in an ad for the diet drink “Sego” on The Today Show. He wanted to know whether she would be interested in collaborating with him. She made her film debut in 1963’s The Birds after signing a seven-year deal with Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock took on the role of drama coach, instructing her in the art of filmmaking and offering advice on how to comport herself as a cultured, international woman of her time.

Tippi Hedren won the Golden Globe for Best New Star for her performance in The Birds. Following her breakout performance in The Birds, Hitchcock cast Tippi Hedren as the lead in his upcoming romantic drama/psychological thriller Marnie.

The relationship between Hedren and Hitchcock was contentious and fraught with tension. According to Hedren, Hitchcock repeatedly made sexual approaches toward her and effectively held her captive by allowing him to accept or reject roles based on his own discretion in their contract. Hitchcock sold her contract to Universal Studios in 1965 after their tense relationship on the filming of Marnie.

After Hedren declined to appear on a TV Western for the Studio, she was sacked despite her appearances in two of their TV productions, Run for Your Life and Kraft Suspense Theatre. Hedren made it public in 1973 that she and Hitchcock had a rift in their working relationship due to a big lifestyle difference.
