Career
Tyreek attended Kansas’s Garden City Community College after finishing high school, where he competed on the football and track teams. He transferred to Oklahoma State University in 2014. Despite being second in the nation for combined return yards and eleventh for all-purpose yards while playing football for the institution, he was dismissed in December 2014 after an arrest for domestic abuse. When Hill enrolled at UWA in September 2015, he played on the football team as a wide receiver, running back, kick returner, and punt returner for the Tigers.
Tyreek, who was expected to go undrafted because of his arrest in 2014, became the first West Alabama player taken since the mid-1970s after impressing scouts during the school’s Pro Day. He was selected with the 165th selection in the 2016 NFL draft. “The young man is trying to do the right things, whether it’s with counseling, whatever it is,” head coach Andy Reid said in response to criticism leveled at the Kansas City Chiefs for selecting him. To better himself, he’s striving to do what’s right. Many men fail to make an effort to rectify wrongdoing. The youngster deserves praise for it. And he’s putting in a lot of time and effort.
After receiving a $70,000 signing bonus and agreeing to a four-year, $2.58 million contract in May 2016, Hill started the 2016 season in multiple roles, including wide receiver, punt returner, and kick returner. He became the first NFL player since Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears in 1965 to accomplish all three in a single game, making history in a game against the Denver Broncos. His first reception in the NFL was a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Smith.
Tyreek was selected as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week as a result of his performance in this game. He led the NFL in punt returns in yards and touchdowns later in the season and was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice. In addition to his first-team All-Pro, All-Rookie, and Pro Bowl honors, Hill was ranked #36 on the “NFL Top 100 Players of 2017” list by his fellow players.
Not only was Tyreek selected to the Pro Bowl for a second time in late 2017, but he also earned first-team and second-team All-Pro honors in 2018. He served a one-game suspension in April 2019 as the team investigated allegations of child abuse; following his release, he signed a five-year, $54 million agreement with the club. After injuring his shoulder in the season opener, he was out until week six with a posteriorly dislocated sternoclavicular joint.
They defeated the 49ers, 31-20, in Super Bowl LIV after winning the AFC West. Tyreek was recognized as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 12 of the 2020 season. In Super Bowl LV, the Chiefs were crushed 31-9 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He broke the previous franchise record most receptions in a season in January 2022 with 106. Two months down the road, the Miami Dolphins acquired Hill in a trade and extended his contract with a four-year, $120 million deal. Of that, $72.2 million was certain.
