Utpanna Ekadashi Katha

Mura, an abominable Demon, existed during the Satya Yuga. Mura was both powerful and terrifying. Mura used his remarkable abilities to overcome not just God Indra, but also a slew of other Gods, and he established himself as the ruler of Indra Loka. To put an end to Mura’s tyranny, all of the Gods went to Lord Shiva for assistance. Lord Shiva advised them to seek Lord Vishnu, the Lokas’ supreme ruler.

To aid the Gods, Lord Vishnu chose to fight Demon Mura. Lord Vishnu and the Gods arrived in Chandravati, Mura’s capital. Lord Vishnu was on one side, while Demon Mura and his army were on the other. According to legend, Lord Vishnu destroyed the entire army of Mura with His Sudarshan Chakra and the heavenly Gada, yet all of His weapons were powerless in the face of Demon Mura’s might. His Sudarshan Chakra and His Gada were both unable to chop Demon Mura’s head and break his neck.

The extended conflict devolved into Malla Yuddha (), a one-on-one fight without the use of weapons. The battle between Lord Vishnu and Mura is said to have lasted 10,000 years. Lord Vishnu stopped fighting when he realized there was no end to the everlasting conflict and went to Badrikashram to rest at Hemvati Caves.

Lord Vishnu was pursued by the demon Mura, who eventually arrived at Badrikashram. When Demon Mura discovered Lord Vishnu asleep, he saw it as an excellent opportunity to assassinate him. A mighty female was produced out of Lord Vishnu’s heavenly body to combat such a diabolical feeling within Demon Mura. The girl was magnificent, powerful, and armed to the teeth to protect Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu’s feminine might overpowered Mura in the combat, killing him by placing Her knee on his chest and chopping off his head.

All of the gods began to praise the girl for her incredible strength. Lord Vishnu awoke oblivious of His own strength and demanded that the girl introduce herself. The girl presented herself as Lord Vishnu’s lustre, having been born from Lord Vishnu’s Yoga Maya. Lord Vishnu was enamoured with His feminine power and requested Her to seek any compensation for the tremendous service she had done.

The young lady inquired “Please give me the power to ensure that anyone who fasts for me is cleansed of all sins and receives salvation. Please bless me so that I can become the most important pilgrimage in the world, capable of bestowing Dharma, Dhanya, and Moksha to my worshippers.”

Lord Vishnu bestowed his blessings on the young lady and told her: “Because you were born on Ekadashi Tithi, you would be known as Ekadashi. You would be worshipped not only by mankind but also by Gods throughout all Yugas. Nothing would make me happier than fasting on Ekadashi. Your adherents would be able to partake in a variety of earthly pleasures while still receiving salvation at the end of their lives.”
