Behind of Vaman Jayanti
Lord Vamana is one of Lord Vishnu’s significant forms. It is Lord Vishnu’s fifth avatar or incarnation. Vishnu Purana and Shrimudagvad Purana provide extensive descriptions of this incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It describes Lord Vamana’s splendour.
According to the legends, the Asuras or Daityas were defeated by the Devas. Bali, the ruler of the Asuras, was unconscious and on his deathbed after being attacked by Indra Dev. At that time, Shukracharya administered his life-saving herb (Sanjeevani) to all the unconscious and assaulted Asuras, restoring their life and vigour. After performing austerities, King Bali became more potent than the Devas. Through his austerities, he was granted a divine chariot, trident, and armour for his protection, and he returned to battle the Devas in heaven.
Indra Deva, upon learning of King Bali’s intentions and that he will be able to conquer heaven in this conflict if he completes 100 yagnas, approached Lord Vishnu for assistance. To defend the Devas from the wrath of the Asuras, Lord Vishnu incarnates as Lord Vamana and is born from the womb of Saint Kashyap’s wife, Aditi. Saint Kashyap then requested that his wife Aditi observe the Payo Fast in order to be graced with a son. Thus, on the Shukla Paksha of the month of Bhadrapad, Aditi gave birth to a son named Vamana. He assumes the Brahmachari form.
Vamana received various gifts from each saint and goddess, including a deerskin from Saint Pulaha, a deerskin from Agastya, a butea rod from Marichi, clothes from Angiras, an umbrella from the Sun, from Bhrigu, Sacred thread and Kamandal from Guru Deva, a loincloth from Aditi, Rudraksha from Saraswati, and a begging tray from Kuber. Vamana went to see King Bali on the day of his 100th Ashwamedh Yagna shortly after reaching adulthood. King Bali instructed Brahmin Vamana to request whatever he desires. Vamana requested three strides of land, which he measured with his own feet.
Since he had made a promise, he was obligated to grant the Brahmins’ request. The first step Vamana took encompassed the entire planet, while the second blanketed the heavens. This allowed him to conquer two of the three planets. There was nowhere to store the third step on which Bali offered Vamana his cranium. Vamana accepted, placing his final foot on Bali’s cranium.
Lord Vishnu was delighted with Bali’s honour for keeping his promise. He granted Bali a single wish. Bali requested that Lord Vishnu be present before him day and night so that he could venerate him. To uphold his promise and grant Bali’s wish, Lord Vishnu had to serve as his gatekeeper.
