Jones was also a Special Advisor for Green Jobs to former President Obama, with whom he collaborated. Van Jones was a professor at Princeton University and a former CNN co-host; you might recognize him from both roles.

The World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader in 2004 and one of the “12 Most Creative Minds” in 2008—in case you hadn’t guessed, this guy is quite intelligent. Jones maintained his position as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people the following year. A little more background on this fascinating human being would be great.

When Was Van Jones Born?

The man known as Anthony Kapel Jones—or “Van Jones”—was born in Jackson, Tennessee on September 20, 1968. Willie Anthony Jones was born to a high school principal father and a high school teacher mother. Angela Jones is Jones’s twin sister, and the two are said to be quite close.

When it comes to Van Jones’s education, he went to Jackson Central-Merry High School. He completed his studies there in 1986. Jones continued his education by enrolling at UT Martin, where he studied political science and communications. But he started to doubt his choices after a while and ultimately enrolled at Yale Law School in Connecticut. Jones believed he wanted to make a difference in the world and relocate to San Francisco to start a revolution the day he finished law school.

Career

Jones interned with newspapers like the Shreveport Times, the Jackson Sun, and the Associated Press while he was a student at UT Martin. He joined the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights later on while he was a student at Yale Law School. Jones established the Bay Area PoliceWatch program in 1995, which served as a hotline for individuals who had been victims of police brutality.

Jones established the nonprofit Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in 1996, honoring the civil rights pioneer and activist whose name it bears. This organization is situated in Oakland, California, and its mission is to end urban violence by creating more equitable, peaceful, and opportunity-filled city neighborhoods. An expansion of the Ella Baker Center’s mission to advance environmental justice occurred later that year, in 2005. As part of this growth, the Green-Collar Jobs Campaign was established. In 2005, Jones and James Rucker co-founded Color of Change, an online civil rights advocacy group. The group’s founders came together in the wake of Hurricane Katrina with the goal of amplifying Black Americans’ voices so that policymakers would pay more attention to problems faced by Black communities.

Jones established Green for All, an environmental justice group, in 2007, expanding on his previous work in this area with the Ella Baker Center. Majora Carter co-founded the organization with the dual goals of creating a green economy and helping people escape poverty. Conservation, regulation, and investment are the three pillars upon which Green for All’s purpose rests. Jones is involved in a number of charitable endeavors; he and Newt Gingrich co-founded the organization Advocates for Opioid Recovery. Along with Jessica Jackson and Matt Haney, he co-founded Dream Corps, an accelerator for social justice. Several advocacy initiatives, such as #YesWeCode and #cut50, are owned and run by the group. Jones has dual roles as chief executive officer and chair of the criminal justice reform group REFORM Alliance. In the past, he has been a board member for organizations like 1Sky, the Rainforest Action Network, Bioneers, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

In 2008, Jones released his debut novel, “The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems,” making him a published author. This book lays out a strategy to address societal and ecological problems simultaneously. It is worth mentioning that “The Green Collar Economy” made history by becoming the first environmental book written by an African-American author to reach the bestseller list of the New York Times.

According to Jones’s 2012 follow-up book, “Rebuild the Dream,” his namesake political group was the main subject. “Beyond the Messy Truth: How We Came Apart, How We Come Together” was his subsequent 2017 publication.

Van Jones’s Personal Life

Jana Carter was the bride of the renowned American commentator in 2005. They divorced in 2018 after 13 years of marriage. They continued to be parents to their children after they divorced and did it as co-parents.

The split was amicable, and to this day, the couple still periodically posts selfies together online. In an Instagram post, Jones confirmed his divorce. During their thirteen years of marriage, Van Jones and Jana Carter welcomed two children into the world. These little ones have matured into adults. Mattai and Cabral are the children of Van Jones.
