The Varalakshmi Vrat, also known as the Varamahalakshmi Vrat, is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Fortune. The word “Vara” stands for “Boon.” The devotees undertake a specialised and special “Lakshmi Puja” on this holy day to appease the Goddess Lakshmi and to seek luck, fortune, and success.
Since India is a multireligious nation, its people represent people of different faiths, including Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and followers of Jainism, Sikhism, and Islam. There are some holidays that are observed on a global scale, some at the national level and some at the regional level. Varalakshmi Vrat, a prominent Hindu festival, is observed by Indian women in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh during all of those festivals. On the Friday before Purnima, the Shravana Masam observes the holy fast (full moon day).

A Friday that comes before Purnima (the full moon day) in Shravana Masam is one of the most auspicious Vrathams in the Hindu religion and is known as Varalakshmi Vratham.

Varalakshmi Puja Vidhanam (Puja Vidhi)
- On the designated day, the devotees get up early, tidy the house, and then take a holy bath.
- The Kalasam, a sacred pot, is placed on the puja altar after it has been set up.
- Then, vermilion, sandal paste, turmeric powder, and flowers are used to embellish the pot.
- The idol of Goddess Lakshmi, which is purchased and subsequently installed on the Kalasam, takes the form of images of sculptures. It is also possible to dress and adorn the sacred pot with jewellery.
- A banana leaf with some rice spread is used to serve the kalasam.
- Then, using grains and flowers, the Varalakshmi puja is done.
- The first step in this procedure is the Varalakshmi Puja, then the Ganpati Puja.
Following the performance of aarti, offerings are made.
All individuals who took part in the rite are given yellow sacred threads to bind around their wrists after the puja is over. It is supposed to bestow Varalakshmi’s blessings.
Varalakshmi Prasadam or Prasad
- During the puja, a variety of foods are served, including rice porridge, jaggery sweets, and boiling lentils, among others.
- When doing the puja, the offerings are typically made in banana leaves and placed in front of the idols. The Prasadam is given to the married women, kids, and other invited guests after Varalakshmi puja is over.
- After the Varalakshmi aarti, the devotees do a final puja in the evening, after which the aspirants can break their fast by eating.
- In the evening, married women are invited, and presents are given to them.
Varalakshmi Vrat Significance
As Lord Shiva personally told Goddess Parvati about the Varalakshmi Vratham, it is regarded as one of the most important and potent rituals. The Varalakshmi Vratham is observed by individuals who experience happiness and relief from all types of pain and grief. The lives and homes of devotees are filled with harmony and peace.
- On the day of Varalakshmi, devotees—primarily married women—observe a fast in hopes of bringing their spouses luck and wellbeing.
- On the Friday before the Raksha Bandhan holiday, during the Shravan Shukla Paksha, the Varalakshmi vrat is observed.
- Water is the only liquid allowed during the fast, and grains must not be consumed.
- If a water-only fast appears challenging, one can also eat fruits and milk. Then, devotees go to the temple of Goddess Lakshmi and pray.
- The goddess Lakshmi’s idols may also be worshipped by devotees at their residences. Then, dhoop, fruits, roses, and lotuses are used to worship the idols.
- There are particular Lakshmi Yantras that can be utilised for Goddess Lakshmi worship.
- People recite the holy mantra Om Hreem Shreem Lakshmi Bhyo Namaha to conclude their pujas.
